De acordo com a Leomie, muitas modelos negras têm medo de serem rotuladas como divas ou como alguém difícil de trabalhar apenas por exigir que os maquiadores e cabeleireiros tratem com respeito seus tons de pele e cabelos.

Em 2016, durante uma situação constrangedora na Fashion Week de Nova York, Leomie usou o Twitter para desabafar ao vivo sobre o que estava ocorrendo no backstage de um desfile. “Por que será que maquiadores negros estão muito ocupados com garotas brancas e loiras e arrasando na maquiagem delas, enquanto eu preciso trazer minha própria base” ela escreveu.

Logo os tweets viralizaram e ela abriu espaço para uma grande discussão sobre racismo na moda. Ela não estava tentando atacar os profissionais daquele desfile, mas todo o sistema que fez com que ela e muitas outras modelos negras passassem pela mesma situação.

Com o sucesso de seu desabafo online, Leomie decidiu não deixar de lado sua parte ativista e continuou usando seu espaço para falar sobre os desafios de ser uma modelo negra, criando até mesmo vídeos no Youtube com indicações de produtos e maquiagens para mulheres com o mesmo tom de pele.

Agora, 3 anos após os tweets de Leomie, outra modelo usou suas redes sociais para falar sobre o mesmo problema. Olivia Anakwe, uma modelo jovem, mas que já participou de diversos desfiles e campanhas ao redor do mundo, usou o Instagram para desabafar sobre a discriminação nos bastidores da Fashion Week de Paris.

“Cheguei no backstage onde eles planejaram fazer cornrows (tranças a partir da raiz), mas nenhuma pessoa do time sabia como fazer e não admitiram isso. Após uma moça tentar e puxar meu cabelo incessantemente, me levantei e procurei uma modelo que soubesse fazer. Após perguntar para duas modelos e, depois, para a única manicure, ela foi tirada do trabalho para fazer meu cabelo. Isso não é legal. Isso nunca vai ser legal. Isso precisa mudar”, escreveu a modelo.

Seu relato recebeu muita atenção da mídia e Olivia foi convidada a dar uma entrevista para o site Teen Vogue. Na entrevista ela ressaltou que esse é um problema constante para as modelos negras, e que se as marcas estão realmente comprometidas em colocar mais diversidade em seus desfiles também precisam contratar profissionais que saibam trabalhar com cabelos afros. “Eu fui ignorada, eu fui esquecida e eu senti isso. É 2019, está na hora de fazer melhor”, concluiu a modelo.
